Introducing our Autumn Artist-in-Residence | Josie Clouting

Artists in Residence: 9th September - 15th December 2024

Bankside Hotel, Art Yard Studio, London SE1 9JU

Bankside Hotel x Contemporary Collective are thrilled to welcome Josie Clouting to the Art Yard Studio as their Autumn Artist in Residence. In the studio from 9th September to 15th December 2024, Josie will develop her practice whilst exploring the different ways people and artists connect to sustainability and landscape.

Inspired by wild and ancient places, Josie’s goal is to deepen her understanding of sustainability and explore how she can help protect the very environments that influence her practice. Through this exploration and the creation of a new body of work inspired by other people’s favourite ‘wild places’, Josie aims to create a sacred space in the heart of the city - one that evokes the feeling of stepping into a serene landscape.

To further investigate this theme and connect with the local Bankside community, Josie plans to invite hotel guests, staff and visitors to share images of their favourite wild places. Josie will paint the images onto small postcards and hang them in a dedicated area of the studio, creating a collaborative collage. Alongside this project, Josie will experiment with working on larger scale paintings and drawings.

Committed to exploring how artists can work in a more environmentally conscious and sustainable way, Josie will also host a round table discussion with fellow landscape artists on all things sustainability and art. In addition to in person engagement, Josie will take over the Contemporary Collective Instagram to share regular updates, progress videos and images of her work. Follow her progress on Instagram @contemporary_collective.

About Josie’s Practice:

Josie graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts in 2012. Her studio is based in Cholsey, South Oxfordshire, UK. She is also an associate member of Ayres House Studios in Wallingford. Josie’s paintings are intuitive responses to the natural environment, inspired by the vastness and wonder of the natural world. The works are saturated with colour and vitality, reflecting her response to light, atmosphere and topography. Painting and sketching en plein air is a vital part of her practice, enabling her to react to the landscape, playing with loose, immediate brush marks. Experimenting with a variety of media including oils, inks and pigments, with many large scale paintings, as a result, are part of the enjoyment of the creative process. Josie's physical movements creating large expansive works are an expression of the energy she feels within the landscape.
